Writer's picture: Ibukun EstherIbukun Esther

As a singer, you need a clear throat to perform well. A congested throat leads to difficulties with pitch, tone, and projection. In the long run, it ruins your gig performance. Some common causes of congested throat include allergies, acid reflux, and stress. Any of these conditions can lead to irritation of your vocals, inflammation, swelling, and mucus production from your throat. Unarguably, a congested throat is one of the worst feelings in the world. If you are wondering how to decongest your throat before a performance, Read On!

Decongest Your Throat

How to Decongest Your Throat

Stay Hydrated

Water is a natural decongestant. It makes the mucus in your throat thinner. The thinner the mucus, the easier it leaves your body. It is advisable to drink enough water before and after singing.

However, you must avoid drinking cold water. Cold water facilitates the growth of bacteria in the mucus, making your throat more congested. On the other hand, hot water will leave your throat hoarse. Hence, ensure your water is lukewarm before drinking.

Avoid Irritants

Stay away from irritants and smoke at all times. Although you may not be a smoker, avoid those who smoke. The fumes pass through your airways and lead to decongestion. Aside from smoking, avoid any spray or fur if you have any allergies.

Humidify Your Environment

In summer, the hot weather may lead to the accumulation of dust and dirt in your practice room. This dust can lead to a congested throat. Ensure you get someone to constantly get rid of the dust. Also, a humidifier should make the air moist and more bearable for practice.

Visit the Sea

Although not scientifically proven, the seaside is a natural decongestant. Drive to a beach the day before your show and bury your feet in the sand. Breathe the clear sea air and watch your throat ease up. A visit to the sea also helps to set your mind on making your performance one of the best.

Get Enough Rest

While you are putting all the work into making your performance stand out, remember to rest. Sleeping about 7-8 hours will help improve your vocal strength. Sleep helps to boost your immune system. Therefore, it gives your body the strength to fight off bacteria clogging your throat.

See the Doctor

If you have a history of acid reflux, the acid may be a cause of your congested throat. Avoid spicy or acidic foods. These foods can worsen your situation. Also, some other ailments can contribute to the unclear throat. It is advisable to visit the doctor before the show. Stick to any medications you are on and go for a routine checkup.

Pre-Show Warm-Ups

Warming up with light exercises helps to prepare your vocal cords for your performance. Warm-ups help to loosen your vocal muscles, increase blood flow, and expand your vocal range. It reduces the tension and strengthens your throat despite previous congestion. Examples of some light vocal exercises include humming, lip thrills, and tongue twisters.

These tips help you feel better during your performance. It would help if you did not let a congested throat ruin your gig as a singer. But, if you do not get better before your show and it leads to cancellation, visit your doctor. You can always get another gig using the SoundHeart Robotic AI Booking agent.
